SFU Home

What?

SFU gives all students 10GB of storage in a space often referred to as "SFU Home". Typically, this storage is only accessible on university-managed device, like the computers in the computer labs. I wanted to access this on my own computer.

Who?

I'm in the School of Computing Science, part of the Faculty of Applied Science. This may or may not work for others. I don't see why it wouldn't but what do I know...

sphinx.sfu.ca

You'll need the SFU VPN to access this. See here to get started.

On the managed devices, the sfuhome storage is a network drive to sphinx.sfu.ca. On your own device, after you've connected to the VPN, add a network drive.

Then, in the popup, enter \\sphinx.sfu.ca\<id> as the folder, where <id> is your computing ID. For example, \\sphinx.sfu.ca\jtmulhol.

Notice how you didn't enter your password; authentication is done by accessing it via the VPN.

That's it! When you aren't connected to the VPN, you won't be able to access the network drive. If you accidentally click on it, Explorer might freeze for a bit because Microsoft only makes quality software :)

More

  • Learn more here, under the 'alternative' section.
  • For file transfer, you can probably use rock.its.sfu.ca as detailed here.
  • Your personal webpage is hosted at www.sfu.ca/~<id>, where <id> is your computing ID. For example, www.sfu.ca/~jtmulhol. You can modify content through the SFU Home drive: learn more here.
  • This doesn't have to be a network drive; you can also use it as a local folder. It's pretty much the same setup. I switched over to the network drive because it seems to handle better when I accidentally click on it when not connected to the VPN.
